Lada, a marque of the Russian automaker AvtoVAZ, holds a place of prominence in the global automotive industry due to its long history and unique market positioning. Known for their durability and affordability, Lada cars have carved a niche for themselves in numerous markets worldwide.

The history of Lada began in 1966, when a collaboration between Italy's Fiat and the Soviet Union resulted in the establishment of AvtoVAZ. The first Lada car, known as the VAZ-2101, was launched in 1970. It was based on the Fiat 124 sedan, but had been significantly re-engineered to cope with the harsh climates and rough roads found in much of Russia.

Lada cars became well-known for their durability, simplicity, and off-road capabilities, especially the Lada Niva, a compact 4x4 vehicle launched in 1977. The Niva was one of the first mass-produced four-wheel-drive cars to feature a unibody design and independent front suspension, and it quickly gained a reputation for its impressive off-road capabilities.
